Designed by Michelangelo, it is the tallest dome in the world, reaching a height of 136 meters (446 feet) from the floor to the top of the cross. It has an inner diameter of over 41 meters. Interestingly, Michelangelo did not live to see it finished. It was completed by his student Giacomo della Porta, who altered the original plans by raising the dome into a taller, parabolic shape to improve its structural stability.
