Thanks to the skip the line tickets, we started the tour through a different entrance. The line was HUGE, so I’m grateful we could get started with the tour right away. There’s just so much to see inside the museums! My favorites were the Raphael Rooms.
There's something special about visiting the Vatican Museum! You can practically feel the history coming out of the collections of art. And the Gallery of Maps…the details in the paintings are so gorgeous! I'd take this tour again just for another chance to see the Rotunda and its statues. Highly recommend booking it!

Did you know what the Vatican Museum’s first piece of art was?
It was the sculpture "Laocoön and His Sons". Laocoön was a Trojan priest of Poseidon. He tried to warn his fellow Trojans not to bring the wooden horse left by the Greeks into the city. As revenge, Athena and Poseidon, who supported the Greeks, sent two sea serpents to kill Laocoön and his two sons. The sculpture shows the near-life-sized serpents attacking and devouring the three figures.
The Vatican Museums were founded by Pope Julius II in the early 16th century. He was the one who brought "Laocoön and His Sons" to the museum.
